Here is a tutorial with some nifty engineering on how to make a little washer work.

Here Hobo Mamma talks about cloth diapering in an apartment.

I stumbled across this jewel on how NOT to wash diapers. It's a pretty good read!

You can buy a special plunger on Amazon for about $15, you can also get a wash board and ringer for about $225.But you should know a brand new toilet plunger will work just fine, as will a simple 5 gallon bucket from the hard ware store. All said a nice ringer would be great to have though.

I have used the bucket and plunger method to wash and can vouch  for it, and the info and reviews I have read on it backs it as a sound washing method. The hand crank wonder wash on the other hand seems pretty iffy with mostly bad reviews. FOr the money I simply couldn't recommend it.

Here is an article on bucket washing.

Now...
If I was bucket washing in a car I would have one bucket fr inserts and a separate bucket for covers. For plunger method I prefer two separate buckets one for inserts and the second for covers, but doing them one after another works too. I would do this unless I only had a few to wash then I would wash together.

Reason...
The reason for this being. covers can be easily hand treated for poo. Covers do not hold much water and wash faster. They also don't hold soap as tight and rinse faster. Covers also have sensitive PUL that you need to use caution with when washing if you add anything to your wash or rinse cycles.

Inserts soak up everything and often need more pre soaking, rinses and some times more washing. Also you can add vinegar, baking soda and peroxide to your inserts when washing. This will break down and damage PUL. Thus when washed separately you can get more serious about odor and stain fighting in your inserts.

When bucket washing your clothes you need to be cautious about detergents and build up, just like in your washer. First fill your bucket with laundry and cover with water, just enough so they can float freely and agitate but not so full they don't rub against each other. Let soak at least 15 minutes to allow urine to release. Ring excess water out of items, empty bucket and return items (if you have two buckets I simply move items back and forth from first bucket to second and so forth), add detergent and cover with water. I like using liquid dish soap. You can add an extra squirt to any problem areas, then use your hands to scrub the soiling from that area. You can also add a 1/2 tsp borax and washing soda to the wash water, this is best done in warm or hot water to properly dissolve. Agitate well, then rinse agitating each time till water is clear and no suds or soapy/ slimy feel. I then add 2 tbs baking soda to covers and 2 tbs baking soda and 2 tbs peroxide to inserts and prefolds for a rinse cycle. (Peroxide in non PUL items only) I let this one sit for 15 minutes or more to soak. Then make sure you rinse till all bubbles are gone and water is clear. I always do one more bucket rinse than I think is needed just to make sure all detergents are rinsed free. You can also do a vinegar rinse on non PUL items, NEVER use vinegar on PUL!

Ok and I just had to include this which talks about the down side of the plunger method. I must tell you this had me cracking up! I love the bike idea! Now you can get your work out while you wash!
